Bicameral Mind - What does it mean for you?
This theory has been brought to my attention when I was doing research on religions and the origins of religion. And 'well-known today that we have a split in our brains, basically it is considered as two sides. This is the very definition of the two chambers. Bi meaning two chambers meaning and mind. Or something like that.
This theory was invented by Dr. Julian Jaynes in his book, The Origin of Consciousness in the collapse of the bicameral mind, you would probably have preferred not to read. It is a kind of boring, unless you are really in the whole concept. In short, the theory states that for thousands of years, humans were not conscious in the same way we are today. He said that the two halves of the brain were separated in one half was the 'human mind' and the other the 'mind of God'. (My words here, not his). Basically the god-man mind-controlled in mind something like a puppeteer pulling the strings.
So you had a society composed of members with schizophrenia. This was the norm. If the god-voice was strong enough, maybe he started to dictate and the man-mind would write down the thoughts. These were the foundations of the first religious scripture. (Remember I'm just paraphrasing the theory, not necessarily married.) The more God-conscious mind was, the more likely the person who was to become "the voice of God" or better known as a prophet. This went on for quite some time. Eventually, through the evolution of our mind, the two halves of the mind and the mixed part of God has become our conscience.
Today, if someone hears voices in his head are considered mentally unbalanced. Thousands of years ago they were revered. We're making progress here or what? Maybe not. Entries are really just a part of someone is more primitive state, or are they actually communication from another plane? I know this is 'out there' and I'm not saying one way or another what is the truth with a capital T. I do not know one way or another.
I believe that the prophets of the past had only to convince themselves that they were listening to God, and then convince others of the fact, then it may start a new religion. It is still happening today. They are the messengers of charlatans made by God? There are new religions that make up all the time. To have a greater acceptance, many of which branches of established religions. You can look at the Lutheran movement, if you want to go back in history different ways, or you can check the Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses for examples of early 20 th century. Newer examples could be Branch Davidians, Heaven's Gate or Muslim militants.
It 'a scary thought to think that all the rules and commandments could only be the product of the division personality thousands of years ago. Another thing to think is that if someone who is incarcerated in a mental institution is in fact a true prophet of God, but is in a rubber room and can not get the message.
