Teens: When can I start working?
Intro.
We all like to have a bit 'of money that you can flash around, and we all would like to have more money so you can go out on weekends with our friends, but getting money is not as easy as it seems, is 've had too much money you moan mom already this week and then there's Dad suggested to pay your own way getting a job.
I'm sure each of you has been in a situation similar to one (or more) points in your life, the good thing is, once you hit 13 you are legally allowed to work a job (with limitations). The limits of what jobs you can do and how long you can work for change as you get older.
At what age?
Here is a guide on how many hours you can do, what you should expect to be paid, and what types of work are allowed to work when young.
At age 13;
- You can not work before 19:00 or after 07:00.
- You can work between school hours.
- You can not work more than 2 hours in a day of school.
- One can not work for more than 1 hour before school.
- You can only work for 2 hours on a Sunday.
At 14;
- You can work up to 5 hours on a Saturday or any day during the school holidays, but must have a break of 1 hour if you work for 4 hours at a time.
- You can work up to 2 hours on Sunday.
- You can work on a market stall IF employed by your parents must be licensed by the local authority.
- You must take a break of 2 weeks during the year - and in your time of travel.
At 15 years (until the end of compulsory education);
- You can work up to 8 hours on a Saturday or any day during the school holidays, but must have a break of 1 hour if you work for 4 hours at one time
- You can work up to 2 hours on Sunday.
- You must take a break of 2 weeks during the year - and in your time of travel.
At 16 and 17;
- There is no limit of hours, but if you are under 18 you can not work in a job that the Labor Department considers hazardous.
What jobs can I do?
There are a variety of jobs that are available for you to do, listed below are some of the most popular works chosen by teenagers.
- Paper Round.
- Baby.
- Employment in Europe.
- Working in a shop.
- Car wash (not in a garage).
- Working in a riding.
What jobs Can I Do?
- Working in the kitchen of a bar, food, etc.
- Working in a cinema or theater.
- Working in a nightclub.
- The supply of milk in glass containers.
- The collection of money at people's houses.
What can I earn?
The amount you earn may vary depending on the type of job you take and the employer. On average you should expect to gain about 3 pounds per hour.
The national minimum wage does not apply to workers under 16, and there is no protection in English law regarding wage rates for those under the age of eighteen years.

They are classified as school age until the date they are officially allowed to leave school. NOT your 16th birthday or when you received your National Insurance Number.
The law has this date as the last Friday of June for all year 11 pupils.
